Taliban Halts Polio Vaccination: A Major Global Health Setback

Afghanistan Faces Reversal in Polio Eradication Efforts

The Taliban has suspended polio vaccination campaigns in Afghanistan, one of the last countries where the virus is still endemic. The UN and WHO warn that this move could reverse years of progress. With a shift away from house-to-house vaccinations to site-based immunizations in mosques, reaching vulnerable children has become more difficult. This setback may also impact neighboring Pakistan, increasing the risk of regional and global outbreaks of polio.
