Steve Jobs Secret to Perfection: The Advice from His Dad

How a Simple Lesson Shaped Apple’s Pursuit of Excellence

Steve Jobs once revealed how a piece of advice from his father, Paul Jobs, significantly influenced his approach to perfection. According to Steve Jobs’ biographer, Walter Isaacson, Paul told Steve, “You’ve got to make the back of the fence, that nobody will see, just as good looking as the front of the fence.” This lesson instilled in Jobs a commitment to excellence, regardless of whether details were visible to others.

Jobs applied this philosophy at Apple, ensuring every aspect of their products, even the hidden parts like microchips and screws, met the highest standards. As Jobs himself put it, “When you’re a carpenter making a beautiful chest of drawers, you’re not going to use a piece of plywood on the back, even though it faces the wall.”
