On October 16, 2024, India launched its fourth nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarine (SSBN), codenamed S4*, at the Ship Building Center in Visakhapatnam. This significant development comes amid rising tensions with adversaries and aims to enhance India’s nuclear deterrence capabilities. The new submarine is equipped with K-4 missiles, boasting a range of 3,500 km, and features approximately 75% indigenous content. As part of a broader strategy to strengthen maritime defense, India continues to prioritize submarine capabilities over conventional aircraft carriers, ensuring a robust response to regional threats.
