Sri Lanka’s New President Balances India-China Relations Amid Financial Crisis

Anura Dissanayake seeks strong ties with both India and China while avoiding geopolitical conflicts.

Sri Lanka’s newly elected Marxist President, Anura Dissanayake, has made it clear that he does not want his country to be “sandwiched” between India and China. While both nations are important partners in Sri Lanka’s economic recovery, Dissanayake aims for balanced diplomacy. He also expressed a desire to foster relations with the West, Middle East, and Africa, in a bid to secure much-needed financial aid. His foreign policy will prioritize Sri Lanka’s sovereignty and economic stability without aligning with global power conflicts.
