Demi Moore Latest Film Falls Flat on Intensity and Insight

Coralie Fargeat’s “The Substance,” intended as the feminist horror event of the year, fails to deliver on its bold premise. The film, featuring Demi Moore in a body-horror thriller about identity-swapping via a sinister injectable drug, quickly descends into repetitive grotesquery. Despite strong special effects and a compelling concept, the movie’s overlong runtime and lack of nuanced execution undermine its potential. Instead of being a sharp social commentary, it becomes a tiresome display of body horror. Moore’s performance offers moments of depth, but they’re overshadowed by a film that struggles to balance its visceral shocks with intellectual substance.
